Our baby boy, Elio Zagros Bassir Afshan born on August 31🩵

I never imagined I would say goodbye to them.
I lived it — solid, eternal, unbearable farewells
to my essentials: my father, my brother, lovers, friends.

I never imagined leaving my hometown,
then leaving again, until I arrived where I am now.

Never imagined working 8 to 5,
never imagined meeting someone so late,
so unprepared,
never imagined a soft-hearted man like you,
carrying so much,
yet staying humble, loyal, loving.

Never imagined giving birth.
Never imagined a baby’s voice so tender,
a smile so luminous.
Never imagined mornings
with him between us,
as if we hold the brightest jewel in the universe,
and also each other.

Never thought I’d long to do it all again —
to be pregnant, to give birth once more.
Never thought a 0.01% chance
could become the reality of my baby.
Never imagined science bending in that way.
Never imagined my baby would come
with three chromosomes.
Never imagined so much
that circles around that truth.

The vast unknown tears a hole in my heart.
Still, I whisper to myself:
be grateful, be patient,
heal,
see that reality is softer
than the fear that blinds me.

I hold my newborn,
look at you and at Niko,
and I trust —
our love is vast enough
to make us happy,
no matter what.

Every mark speaks. Each one tells a story from a moment when I was fully immersed in giving life to something lifeless. I’ve been constantly moving—through places and spaces where I’ve felt deeply and created in order to crystallize those feelings, to hold onto them, and to return to them later.

Today, I said goodbye to my old studio at Mana Contemporary and moved into a new space there. 🩵

A new chapter begins. A new life is growing inside

A new chapter begins.
A new life is growing inside me.
I am making life again.
But you are far gone now, and it’s the quiet horror of being alive.
People die—even the ones we love the most.
At any moment. Even now.

And still, I keep making myself fragile by choosing more life,
more love, more living.

There must be a way to make peace with this cycle of life and death—
to accept that we are only small pieces of a much larger circle.
You and I, my baby, my love—we come, we smile, we hold each other’s hands,
and then… we disappear.

There must be a way to accept this.
And here, as I make marks in this painting, I’m searching for it.

فردوس Ferdous / Paradise

The place where all Goddesses are from.
You are that, and I am too.
A sanctuary we create for our offspring,
A safe zone woven from our very being.
How wondrous it is to give birth,
To bring forth life,
To craft a living soul from our own.
Our bodies, their haven.
We nourish, we protect.
They are safe in there—only in there.
Or perhaps it is us who feel safe
When they are within.
Life is greater than our love for them,
Greater than our wombs,
Greater even than the Ferdous we create.
Life, with its relentless cycles,
Consumes us whole.
We turn away,
We wish to forget.
But in my dreams, there will always be a place,
A Ferdous like the one I created for you.
A place for us to live forever.
We wish.
