Hope Tree is an ongoing body of work that Afshani returns to across different periods of her life, particularly during moments of uncertainty, loss, and the need for renewal. First initiated in Australia through encounters with monumental fig trees, the project has continued to evolve, reemerging whenever hope feels fragile or urgently needed.
Rooted in ancient cultural and mythic traditions, the series draws on the idea of sacred and hanging trees—forms that carry memory, endurance, and collective witness. These trees become stand-ins for human presence: bodies suspended between life and history, loss and continuity. In this work, trees are not symbols of escape, but of bearing—holding grief, memory, and resilience across generations.
Hope Tree reflects on how humans seek anchors in times of despair, and how living forms become vessels for remembrance, survival, and quiet resistance. Through repeated return and transformation, the project affirms hope not as certainty, but as persistence.
